KARACHI, Dec 18: Former judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, who recently formed the ‘committee for the rule of law’, have called upon political parties to work for a neutral Election Commission.

Addressing a press conference, they said the committee included only those judges who had declined to take oath on January 26, 2000, under the Provisional Constitution Order.

They said the committee comprised former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui and former judges, Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, Justice Khalilur Rehman Khan, Justice Mamoon

Kazi, Justice Wajihuddin Ahmad and Justice Kamal Mansoor Alam.

They said that reconstitution of the Election Commission was imperative for free and fair election.

They called for a fully empowered commission acceptable to all parties taking part in the election process.

They also called for ending all curbs on the media to enable it to perform its role of keeping the people informed about important events through objective reporting.

They were of the view that lawyers were not beneficiaries of the movement for the independence of judiciary and that was the reason behind the success of their movement.

Answering a question, Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid said that all deposed judges of superior courts should be reinstated to the pre-November 3 position.—APP
