Wariner aims for Golden League jackpot

PARIS, Dec 13: American one-lap wonder Jeremy Wariner will be in with a real shot at the one-million-dollar Golden League jackpot next season after organisers brought in the 400m as one of the 10 headlining events.

Wariner, the Olympic and world champion, missed out last season after the 400m was taken off the roster of disciplines counting for the jackpot.

The men’s disciplines for next season will now be the 100m, 400m, 1500m, 400m hurdles, long jump, and javelin, while the women have had their events cut by one and will now compete in the 200m, 800m, 100m hurdles, and high jump.

“With three new disciplines in 2008, our goal is to provide an attractive range of events which will help us to promote some of the most exciting talents in our sport,” said Lamine Diack, president of world athletics’ governing body, the IAAF.

Athletes will have to remain unbeaten in all six meetings to grab a share of the total jackpot of one million dollars.

The IAAF added that if none of the athletes from the 10 disciplines manage to finish the series unbeaten, it would award 500,000 dollars to be shared out between the athletes who win five of the six meetings.
