SYDNEY, Dec 9: More than 300 firefighters battled wildfires threatening a tourist resort and a small fishing and surfing community on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island on Sunday, local media reported.

The Country Fire Service said the fires had burnt more than 21,000 hectares of the island, with the small community of D’Estrees Bay “still at risk” and many roads closed, the national AAP news agency said.

One person was killed by the fires last week as he tried to flee in his car from flames raging across an island seven times the size of Singapore.

The owner of the Kangaroo Island said the wind was driving one of the fires from the Flinders Chase National Park towards the property.
