Four die in BD building collapses

DHAKA, Dec 9: At least four people were killed and 14 others injured when a multi-storey building partially collapsed in the Bangladesh capital, officials said on Sunday.

Workers sleeping inside the Rangs Building were also feared trapped after it collapsed around them late on Saturday, police and fire brigade officials said.

The labourers had earlier been helping to demolish the building and had stopped work for the evening, officials said.

It is unclear exactly how many workers were still trapped inside the building but at least 14 had escaped with minor injuries, he said.

At least four people are confirmed dead, although we could not recover the bodies from the piles of rubble, said head of the fire brigade rescue team Salim Newaz Bhuiyan.

Fire brigade and army rescue teams have postponed the search operation after experts said other parts of the 18-storey building could cave in at any time, he added.—AFP
