KARACHI, Nov 22: The Sindh High Court on Thursday directed the city government to act strictly in accordance with law in acquiring land for the expansion of Gujjar Nullah in Liaquatabad.
Thirty-eight petitioners claiming to be the lawful allottees of the land adjoining the drainage channel submitted through Advocate Islam Hussain that they had been granted lease under the Katchi Abadi scheme. The city government had drawn up a plan for widening the drain and wanted to acquire their land. They were sought to be evicted without any notice.
A division bench comprising Justices Yasmeen Abbasy and Mahmood Alam Rizvi asked the city government to act in accordance with the law and issued notices to it and the Katchi Abadis Authority.
The former judge of the Sindh High Court, Ghulam Nabi Soomro, took over as chairman of the Sindh Services Tribunal on Thursday.
He succeeds Justice (retd) Abdul Ghani Shaikh, who retired on the expiry of his term. The senior vice-president of the Pakistan Services Bar Association, Mohammad Nawaz Shaikh, has welcomed the appointment of Justice Soomro in view of his rich experience.
