OKARA, Nov 21: Four labourers were killed while eight others were injured when an overloaded tractor-trolley overturned near Bonga Saleh village on Deepalpur-Pakpattan Road on Wednesday.
The tractor-trolley laden with maize bags was going to Lahore. Soon after leaving the village, driver Ashiq lost control over the steering after hitting a road bump and the vehicle overturned.
Around a dozen labourers onboard the vehicle buried under maize bags as a result of which Javaid, Nawaz, Khurshid and Murtaza died instantly while the remaining were rescued.
COMMUNITY POLICING: The Okara police are developing the concept of community policing, and in this connection a blood donors society has been formed with the cooperation of the citizen police liaison committee, DPO Mirza Faran Baig told Dawn on Wednesday.
He said 4,000 young men had got themselves registered with the society. He said now needy patients could get help in this regard by just calling Rescue 15 and volunteer donors would contact the caller.
He said the DPO office had also distributed kitchen items worth of Rs450,000 among families of deceased policemen who lost their lives while performing their duties. He said each family was given kitchen items worth of Rs5,000.
SEWERAGE: Residents of village 5/4-L in the suburbs of Okara city had been facing poor hygienic conditions for the past five months due to the choked sewerage and drainage system.
Abdul Sattar, a retired PTCL officer, said the stagnant drainage water had inundated over 40 per cent area of his village adjacent to the city and the union council nazim and the naib nazim had expressed their helplessness to fix the problem.
He said dozens of open manholes and drains were causing a great deal of inconvenience to locals and also spreading diseases.
He said the locals had no access to main mosque, cemetery and girls school of the village, especially a main road on its western side. He urged the tehsil nazim to rescue them.
