KARACHI, Nov 18: Armed motorcyclists shot dead two policemen and took away an official AK-47 when they were asked to stop during a snap-checking in Garden area on Sunday.
Head Constable Muhammad Zulfiqar and Constable Adam Ali were on duty in Usmanabad, an area close to Lyari Town, where they signalled the motorcyclists to stop during a snap-checking.
“But one of the motorcyclists did not stop and opened fire when chased by the policemen,” said Captain Tahir Naveed, SP Saddar Town.
“The police returned the fire wounding one of the two gunmen. However, the bullets sprayed by the motorcyclists proved fatal for both policemen,” he said, and confirmed that the culprits took away an AK-47.
Witnesses said the victims received several bullets in their chests and faces which proved fatal. Area people later shifted the bodies in a private car to the Civil Hospital Karachi for the post-mortem examination.
About the arrest of killers, Capt Naveed said, “One of the culprits was wounded when our policemen chased them and returned fire on resistance. We have been looking mainly for him and are very much confident to get at least that wounded guy very soon,” he added.
Medical report
An official at Garden police station said that an FIR of the killings would be lodged once the medical process was completed. “We expect the FIR registration later in the night, as police high-ups are more occupied with the medical report and the grieved families of the two victims,” he added.
Head Constable Muhammad Zulfiqar, who got married almost a year ago, had no child. He was posted in Garden police station in January this year. He was 36.
Constable Adam Ali had left behind a widow and five children to mourn his death. The 42-year-old resident of Khokrapar had been serving with the Garden police for the last two years.
Their murder sparked fears among the area residents who stayed indoors for the rest of the day. Almost all shops were kept closed and traffic on roads remained thin after the incident.
Police later increased mobilization with several police vans patrolling the area. Policemen were also deployed at major exit and entrance points of the area.
