Olmert faces fresh allegations

JERUSALEM, Nov 15: Israeli police said on Thursday they are examining a fourth case of possible corruption involving Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Documents linked to Olmert’s campaign for the leadership of the right wing Likud Party in 1999 were at the centre of the case, they said.

“Documents were sent to us recently by the prosecutor’s office relating to an affair linked to the Olmert campaign for the Likud party primary elections in 1999, and we are examining them,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

He refused to be more specific on the nature of the allegations possibly implicating Olmert at a time when he belonged to the nationalist right-wing party, which is now in opposition.

The premier has been besieged by corruption allegations, and is currently the subject of three police investigations.

He faces police probes into allegations that he abused his authority in the privatisation of a major bank in 2005 and effectively received a bribe in the cut-price purchase of a luxury Jerusalem home in 2004.—AFP
