KARACHI, Nov 10: A photo exhibition titled “Russia, a space power” was held at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (formerly Friendship House) to celebrate two remarkable dates in the history of the outer space explorations.

In September 2007, the world celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of the Russian scientist K. Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935), regarded as the father of astronautics and jet propulsion theory.

October 4 is also an important day as on this day 50 years back, the first man-made satellite “Sputnik” was launched by the Soviet scientists and engineers into the circum-terrestrial orbit.

The Russian Centre in collaboration with RIA Novosti information agency organised the photo exhibition in which a unique collection of photos reflecting the history of the Russia’s achievements in the field of outer space.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Consul General of Russia V. V. Seliverstov and Arshad H. Siraj, the Director General (SR) of Suparco (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Arshad Siraj reminded the audience that Nov 6-12 would be observed as the World Space Week.

Various institutions of space research, science and technology have organised progrmmes for students and professionals in connection with the Word Space Week.—APP
