PESHAWAR, Nov 6: The president of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association, Abdul Lateef Afridi, was placed under house arrest by the provincial home department on Tuesday as the hunt for lawyers by the police continued.

Police raided various places for lawyers who have gone into hiding, including the joint secretary of the PHCBA, Barrister Waqar, president of the Peshawar District Bar Association, Maulana Shamsul Haq, Abdul Majeed Khan, Ghulam Nabi and Rafique Bangash.

Justice Shahjehan Khan Yousufzai of the Peshawar High Court, who did not take oath of office under the Provisional Constitutional Order, visited the barroom in the high court and thanked lawyers for extending cooperating to him during his tenure as a judge.

The lawyers greeted him with slogans of “Long live Justice Shahjehan” and “Long live Justice Tariq Pervez”.

Justice Yousufzai told journalists that the lawyers’ movement was for the supremacy of the Constitution. He paid tribute to lawyers who had been rendering sacrifices in the ongoing movement.

The lawyers’ action committee decided to set up a hunger-strike camp and to continue their boycott of all court proceedings.
