KARACHI: Arrests slated

Published November 6, 2007

KARACHI, Nov 5: Media organisations in the metropolis have condemned the imposition of emergency, restrictions on the media and arrest of journalists and political and social workers.

At their separate meetings held here on Monday, the Karachi Union of Journalists, the Association of Television Journalists and the Karachi Press Club reviewed the situation for evolving a strategy.

The meetings condemned the arrests and harassment of journalists and photographers coming to the KPC and warned the government that they would not tolerate any attempt to violate the sanctity of the club.

The three media bodies also criticised the Sindh government for sealing the Jang press. They also condemned the law enforcement agencies for besieging the KPC due to which business activities in the area were also affected.

A joint meeting of the KUJ, the ATJ and the KPC will be held on Tuesday to adopt a joint strategy against the restrictions on the media.
