KARACHI: Referendum opposed

Published March 25, 2002

KARACHI, March 24: Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has rejected the proposed referendum and any basic amendments to the Constitution and observed that the election of the president through referendum would not be extra-constitutional, but trampling of the Supreme Court decision.

Speaking at a public meeting held on Pakistan day in a hall in Lyari PML(N), acting Sindh president Mamnoon Hussain said that a particular set of politicians, vying to assume power through back-door, have proposed referendum before the holding of general elections.

He said the rulers were afraid of returning home of Nawaz Sharif due to his popularity and want to postpone elections after referendum.
