LONDON, Nov 1: Frank Lampard scored his third goal in injury time to give defending champion Chelsea a 4-3 victory over Leicester in the League Cup Wednesday, while Arsenal also moved into the quarterfinals of England’s second-tier cup competition with a 3-0 win at Sheffield United.

Chelsea trailed twice against Leicester, but Andriy Shevchenko and Lampard both scored in the last three minutes for the victory.

Eduardo da Silva scored twice for Arsenal, last season’s runner-up, while Tottenham beat visiting Blackpool 2-0 in Juande Ramos’ first match as manager.

Record seven-time winner Liverpool beat Cardiff 2-1, Blackburn won 2-1 at Premier League rival Portsmouth, and Manchester City and Everton also advanced with wins.

Chelsea struggled against Leicester, which won the League Cup in 1997 and 2000 but has fallen to the bottom half of the League Championship. Lampard rescued the Blues with his first goals in two months.

But Lampard made it 1-1 in the 20th, scoring after Scott Sinclair’s header back into the area, and gave his side the lead nine minutes later with a side-footed volley.

DJ Campbell and Carl Cort put the Foxes ahead 3-2 with 16 minutes left and Chelsea manager Avram Grant inserted Michael Essien and Florent Malouda to boost his side.

Shevchenko equalized in the 87th and Lampard then headed into the net to put the Blues into the next round with a sixth straight win in all competitions.—AP
