KARACHI, Oct 29: The staff of the Regional Directorate for Colleges, Karachi, on Monday revealed that several rooms in the office complex were ransacked on Saturday night by unknown intruders who also took away some computers, printers and official records.

Sources in the directorate said that the intruders seemed to have gone on the rampage in the offices where important records, including service files of college teachers and non-teaching staff, and costly computers and accessories were kept.

The directorate is located in an annexe of the KBCA building behind the Civic Centre in Gulshan-i-Iqbal where offices of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and other government departments also exist.

The provincial education secretary, director general of colleges and the area police have been informed about the incident.

Insiders, however, linked the ransacking of the offices after breaking the locks of the directorate to the plan under which some offices of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) are to be housed in a big hall and some rooms, currently in the use of the Directorate of Colleges.

When contacted, head of directorate Ms Munawar Shafiq, said she had came to know about the incident only on Sunday. She said she immediately talked to the authorities concerned in the CDGK and the provincial director of colleges.

“After making a lot of efforts and receiving directives from the high-ups, I and my staff were able to enter the dismantled premises at around 3:45pm on Monday in the presence of police,” Ms Shafiq said, adding: “We were taken aback as everything in the office had badly been disturbed and laying scattered here and there.”

She said that electronic equipment, official records, files of teachers and the things belonging to the audit and account section were missing. She said a thorough investigation had to be conducted into the whole affair.

She said that a complete inventory of missing properties would be prepared to facilitate the investigation.

In reply to a question, she said that she had already told certain CDGK officials that the directorate was ready to withdraw from the premises as soon as some suitable place was found.
