LAHORE, Oct 27: Citizens are facing numerous problems as Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) is continuing its loadshedding plan contrary to its claims of shelving the practice after Ramazan.

The unscheduled loadshedding is bothering residents of almost all localities in the provincial metropolis and in some areas it is done for a comparatively longer period of time.

Wapda officials say their promise about providing uninterrupted power supply to consumers was only for the month of Ramazan and the same was fulfilled successfully.

They say the present loadshedding was being done to overcome drop in power production due to shortage of water as well as overhauling of power generators.

The situation will improve after the overhauling process, which, they say, will take around 20 days more and it will complete past mid-November.

According to them, the authority is facing 1,500MW to 2,000MW power shortage daily — 500MW in the morning, 1,000MW at noon and over 1,500MW in the evening.

Wapda consumers say they suffer power outages at least thrice in a day. In some localities situated along Multan Road, the duration of loadshedding is longer than other areas.

Arshad Mahmood of Rustam Park, Gulshan-i-Ravi, says electricity goes off for an hour at 11am, for half an hour at 5:15pm and again for an hour at 11pm.

There are some localities in southern part of the city like Valentia Housing Scheme where the duration of power outage is only quarter of an hour.

However, some areas are facing severe power shutdown on various days. In Jehanzeb and Kashmir Blocks of Iqbal Town, Clifton Colony and other adjacent localities the power is being shut for five hours — from 8am to 1pm — on Mondays. The exercise, continuing for the last couple of months, has forced schools managements in the area to observe Sunday and Monday as weekly offs instead of Saturday and Sunday.

Lesco officials say the problem is occurring due to construction work. They are not sure when the task will be completed.
