HYDERABAD, Oct 6: The provincial executive committee of Sindh Abadgar Board has expressed grave concern over the proposal of the Board of Revenue to exempt only 12 acres of land from agriculture tax and to charge Rs500 per acre on orchards.
Abdul Majeed Nizamani presided over the meeting which observed these rates were equal to the rates of Punjab province notwithstanding the fact Punjab had more underground water, more rains and less corruption and law and order situation there was not as bad as in Sindh.
The meeting appealed to the Board of Revenue and the special task force to raise the limit of tax exemption from 12 acres to 16 acres and reduce land tax on orchards from Rs 500 per acre to Rs300 per acre.
It also expressed concern over the land tax and agricultural income tax and termed it as double taxation.
It pointed out wealth tax on urban population had already been abolished under the new Finance Act therefore there was no justification for levying these new taxes on the rural population.
The meeting demanded either land tax or agricultural income tax should be charged from the growers.
In view of the prevailing situation, the growers’ meeting called upon the government to announce subsidy for the crops.
ELECTRICITY: Over 600 former employees of Zeal Pak Cement Factory residing in the factory colony have appealed to the chief executive Hyderabad electric supply company (Hesco) to provide them direct power connections.
In an application submitted to the Hesco chief, they said out of 600 residents, the files of 400 employees were already lying with the SDO, Hesco Hali road for connections but no action had been taken on them.
They claimed if power connections were given to the employees, Hesco would be earning at least Rs100,000 per month in the shape of power bills.
Talking to Dawn, the spokesmen of the employees, Shoaib-ur-Rehman Rana and Muhammad Iqbal said the employees were not being given connections because an amount of Rstwo million was outstanding against the Zeal Pak administration.
They said the ex-employees had nothing to do with this and added instead of punishing them, Hesco should take legal action against the Zeal Pak administration.
They said they wanted to become direct consumers and therefore they should be given power connections independent of the Zeal Pak Cement Factory.
