RAWALPINDI, Oct 22: An additional district and sessions judge (ADSJ) here on Monday handed down seven years rigorous imprisonment to a drug peddler for trying to smuggle charas.

Judge Khalid Ranjha ordered that Mian Abdul Hameed would remain in jail for seven years for carrying six kilogrammes charas with him. He would also have to pay Rs10,000 fine, and in case of non-payment, would have to undergo another two months imprisonment.

On a tip-off, the police arrested Abdul Hameed on July 1, 2006 as he got off a bus coming from Peshawar opposite Daewoo terminal on Peshawar Road. On searching him, the police found six kilogrammes charas.

A criminal case was registered against him under section 9-C of the anti-narcotics act with Westridge police station.

Meanwhile ADSJ Mohammad Sajid Ali Awan asked the station house officer (SHO) of Pirwadhai police station to submit his para-wise comments on October 26 in response to an application for not taking any legal action against some accused persons despite clear orders of the court.

Abdul Habib and Altaf Hussain, both residents of Khayaban-i- Sir Syed, said they had gotten their land vacated from the illegal occupation of some 16 persons through the orders of the Lahore High Court. They stated in their petition that the director anti-corruption Rawalpindi took action against the director, Housing and Physical Planning, and another ADSJ Rana Masood ordered the SHO concerned to taken action against the land grabbers.

The petitioners alleged that so far no action had been taken against the accused due to political influence and police partiality, which had made the case legally weak.

They prayed to the court that the police official might be directed to taken lawful action against the accused.
