KARACHI, Oct 17: The provincial government on Wednesday announced that all educational institutions in the city will be closed on Thursday (today) to save children from facing “expected difficulties” owing to anticipated traffic jams.

The city is set to brace for huge rallies on Sharea Faisal and some other major arteries on the scheduled arrival of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto on Thursday afternoon.

Sindh Chief Secretary Aijaz Ahmed Qureshi ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Karachi citing the “concern” of parents and the possibility of traffic jams.

The provincial education and literacy department followed suit and asked all public and private sector educational institutions to remain closed.

KU and Fuuast

The registrar of the University of Karachi also notified on Wednesday that its campus and affiliated colleges would remain closed on Thursday.

Besides, teaching activities will remain suspended at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (Fuuast).

However, an official of the university said its offices will remain open as usual.

Cambridge system

Callers from various parts of the city contacted the newspaper and expressed their concern over the holding of examinations of the Cambridge system in the city on Thursday when Karachi is expected to be flooded with rallies and processions.

When contacted, an official of the examinations department of the Cambridge system in Sindh and Balochistan refused to comment and declined to give further details.
