Nine killed in Ukraine gas explosion

KIEV (Ukraine), Oct 13: A natural gas explosion ripped through an apartment building in eastern Ukraine on Saturday, killing at least nine people and damaging other nearby buildings, an emergency official said.

The blast destroyed much of the 10-story building in the industrial city of Dnipropetrovsk, about 600 kilometers from the capital, Kiev.

Rescue workers have recovered six bodies so far, said Alexander Dmiterko, who is with the regional Emergency Situations Ministry.

Russian and Ukrainian news reports said the blast was so powerful that its shock wave damaged several other multi-story apartment buildings and smaller houses.

The Interfax news agency, citing local medical officials, said 18 more people, including three children, were injured, and 12 of them were hospitalised.
