KARACHI, Oct 4: Pakistan’s name appeared on the medals table when its athletes succeeded in clinching a gold and a silver medal in bocce singles event of the ongoing 12th Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai on Thursday, according to the information received here.

Anwar Hussain captured the first gold for his country beating Alteiri Rafael of Puertorico 12-4 in the final.

Competing in other group, his compatriot Ahmed Mani grabbed the silver when he went down 3-12 to China’s Chen Haoran in the final.

Pakistani athletes are competing in the bocce event for the first time and had fielded two boys and as many girls.

In football, Pakistan overwhelmed Namibia 16-0 in the opener but they suffered a 3-0 loss to Iran in the next match.

Pakistan’s Obaid-ur-Rehman was rushed to Shanghai hospital after he got his two fingers fractured while playing against Iran.

In basketball, Pakistan advanced to the next stage after registering two successive wins in the preliminary rounds. They chalked up a 6-4 victory against Barbados in the opener followed by a 3-0 triumph over Ireland.

In girls’ basketball, Pakistan have been drawn in group four alongside China, Taiwan and India. Pakistan play their first match against China on Friday.
