PESHAWAR, Oct 4: Awami National Party president Asfandyar Wali Khan on Thursday said that re-election of President Pervez Musharraf carried no weight after legislators of the All Parties Democratic Movement had resigned from assemblies.

“The ANP members should work hard to make the strike on Oct 6 successful to stop the military ruler coming from the backdoor,” he said in a message to provincial and district chapters of the party.

The ANP chief said that Gen Musharraf’s attempt to get re-elected from present assemblies would be prevented. He appealed to all democratic-minded people to stand up against the military ruler.

Mr Asfandyar said the government had lost support at all levels and it was now a matter of time that people would get rid of the present undemocratic government.

He criticised the Election Commission for its decision to allow Gen Musharraf to contest the presidential election.

He said the law and order situation during Gen Musharraf’s tenure had deteriorated to a great extent.

Given the price hike, crime ratio, unemployment and poverty, the present government should resign on moral ground, he added.

“These are clear indicators of Gen Musharraf’s utter failure,” he said and hoped that people would resist his re-election.
