KARACHI, Oct 4: A division bench of the Sindh High Court comprising Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Yasmeen Abbasi on Thursday summoned the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Taimoria police station on Oct 10 to offer an explanation on a petition challenging the illegal detention of an old man by the police without showing any offence.

According to applicant Akhtar Ali, a police party arrested his younger brother Zard Khan on Sept 29, 2007 without any offence and took him to the Taimoria police station. They did not allow anyone to meet the detainee. He prayed the court to direct the Taimoria SHO to release his brother illegally detained at the police station.

Following the court’s directives deputy registrar (judicial) conducted a raid on the police station in question and found Zard Khan illegally detained there since Sept 29 without any entry regarding the arrest in the official records.

The division bench after preliminary hearing issued a notice to the relevant SHO and adjourned the hearing till Oct 20.

Meanwhile, another division bench summoned the controller (buildings) of the KBCA in person to offer an explanation on oversight of irregularities in the city.

The applicant submitted that despite earlier direction of the court, the builder and owner of the building, Haji Iqbal, continued the construction during the pendency of the regularisation process.—PPI
