ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani said on Thursday that no-one could be allowed to take the law into his own hands and the government would pursue its own line of action to maintain law and order.

He was responding to a question at a press conference about the unprecedented road blockade in the twin cities on the occasion of the filing of nomination papers by presidential candidates.

The minister said protecting the life and property of the people was the responsibility of the government which would not be compromised at any cost.

When asked what action the government planned to take on September 29, Durrani said no-one would be allowed to violate the law of the land.

He said with the filing of nomination papers, the process of presidential election had entered a new phase.

He welcomed all the presidential candidates and said that the process would culminate on October 6, paving the way for general elections.

“We are taking the presidential campaign on a three-point agenda based on formation of national consensus, broad-based political reconciliation and good governance,” he said.

The minister said Pakistan had been rated second most corrupt country in 1996 and 25th in 1999 by the Transparency International, but in its new report the country had been ranked 42nd.
