ISLAMABAD, Sept 19: Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain and chief whip Sardar Nasrullah Khan Dreshak called on Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Wednesday and discussed with him the overall political situation.

According to sources, views were exchanged on the opposition’s threat to resign from the assemblies, the issue of dissolution of provincial assemblies and petition in the Supreme Court challenging the president’s dual offices.

Prime Minister Aziz termed President Pervez Musharraf’s decision of taking oath as a civilian head of state historic.

The prime minister praised the spirit of harmony with which the business of parliament had been conducted over the past five years, with both the government and the opposition playing important roles.

The prime minister said that dialogue with all political forces was the hallmark of a democratic society, especially when it was done in larger national interest.

Chaudhry Shujaat criticised what he called the opposition’s hollow threat to resign from assemblies and said that people would reject them in elections because of their anti-development agenda.
