MMA accused of duplicity over resignation issue

MARDAN, Sept 18: ANP leader Haji Mohammad Adeel has said that the Muttahida Majlis Amal (MMA) will not resign from assemblies and will strike a bargain with Gen Pervez Musharraf to remain in power.

Talking to Dawn here on Tuesday, he said that the MMA was playing a double role and their policy showed that they would make a bargain with the government to have its caretaker chief minister in the frontier province.

He claimed that Peshawar Nazim Haji Ghulam Ali would be appointed as the chief minister if the understanding reached between the government and the MMA.

The ANP leader said that the ANP would follow the decision of All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) in this regard.

He regretted that despite a decision by the Supreme Court that every citizen had the right to return to the country, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was deported.

He said that the government had breached the norms of democracy and violated the apex court’s decision.

The ANP leader dispelled the impression that opposition activists had failed to gather in sizable number to welcome Nawaz Sharif and condemned that the government blocked and sealed all the leading roads to Islamabad.

He said that Nawaz Sharif’s popularity would be judged from the fact when his workers and supporters would be allowed to welcome him.

About the recent amendment by the chief election commissioner in the election rule, he said that such amendment was made just to clear way for General Musharraf.

He said that the people of Pakistan had rejected General Musharraf and his continuation in the office was not acceptable.
