KARACHI, Sept 18: Residents of Baghdadi area say that the drainage system along D.D. Chaudhry Road, which was laid 50 years ago, has collapsed as it can no longer not cater to the needs of the growing population. Area people say the sewage line had developed cracks at several points which resulted in flooding of the road and adjoining streets with sewage. Many parts of the locality stink, they say, adding that this put their health at risk.

According to the residents, the sewerage system was laid in Baghdadi 50 years ago when its population was very thin. Now it is a densely-populated area where the obsolete system ceases to function, they say.

They also complain that water and sewage lines run parallel in the area and due to leakages contaminated water finds its way into residential areas. They request the authorities concerned to order replacement of the obsolete lines by a 24-dia pipeline at the earliest.

Besides, the residents annoyed over the delay in completion of work on Shah Latif Bhittai Road, which connects D.D. Chaudhry Road and Lea Market, say it was beyond their comprehension why this road has not been repaired so far despite great public demand.
