ISLAMABAD, Sept 13: Pakistan may miss out on December’s Champions Trophy hockey tournament in case the event is staged in India or Malaysia, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) secretary, Khalid Mahmood said on Thursday.

“There’s a chance that Pakistan may get accommodated as the seventh team in the tournament. Otherwise the greenshirts will have to make way for the host country which will be preferred as the sixth participating team in the elite tournament,” the PHF secretary disclosed to newsmen.

“If the event goes to a Spanish city, Pakistan can still participate in the event but in case of India or Malaysia getting the nod, our participation will be in jeopardy since we finished at the bottom among the six teams qualifying for the Champions Trophy including Holland, Australia, Germany, Spain and South Korea.”

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Wednesday decided to move the men’s Champions Trophy from Lahore due to security reasons.

The FIH will name a new venue in a few days with India, Malaysia and Spain all in the line to host the tournament.—APP
