KARACHI, Sept 13: More than 30 retired professors, bureaucrats and army officers occupy senior posts in public sector universities in Sindh. Six of them are vice chancellors. This piece of information was shared with Dawn on Thursday by the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Staff Association (Fapuasa) – Sindh chapter, which has been demanding the removal of such officials both from the administration and the faculty.

According to the list presented by Fapuasa, those holding the posts of vice chancellors in Sindh are: Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui of Karachi University, Abul Kalam of the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi; Mazharul Haq Siddiqui of the Sindh University, Jamshoro; Dr Bashir Ahmed Shaikh of the Sindh Agriculture University, Tando Jam; Dr Anwer Ahmed Junejo of the Quaid-i-Awam University, Nawabshah; and Dr Abdul Qadeer Rajput of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro.

The Fapuasa list also mentions four retired army officers. Three of them are appointed at the MUET — Abdul Razak Qureshi (transport officer), Niaz Qureshi (secrecy officer) and Zia (security officer). The fourth one is working at the Sindh Agricultural University in Tando Jam, Khalid Murad, posted as additional registrar and campus director.

The rest of the officials and professors have completed their tenure and have been reappointed because of their purported links in the institutions.

Fapuasa says there is no place for retired civil and army bureaucrats in the universities, and retired professors should only be involved in research projects and not in teaching.
