COLOMBO, Sept 8: Officials from Sri Lanka have been invited to attend a meeting of the Indian board to discuss the proposed international Twenty20 league.

“We have been asked to come and I will represent Sri Lanka Cricket,” Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Jayantha Dharmadasa said. The meeting will take place in New Delhi on Sept 13.

Dharmadasa, however, indicated they were not aware of the objective of the meeting, saying: “We do not know what exactly the Indians want from the talks.”

Meanwhile, The Age, the Melbourne-based newspaper, reported the league is slated to begin in April 2008 with teams from Australia, England, South Africa and India playing a tournament similar to the UEFA Champions League in football.

The report also suggested that in Australia the league would be run by state associations. Earlier, the BCCI had indicated that team franchises would be auctioned.

The plans for such a league were announced after the Indian Cricket League (ICL) announced its list of over 50 players, including high-profile players like Brian Lara, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf and Lance Klusener.—Agencies
