LAHORE, Sept 5: Perhaps the most mind-boggling issue being faced these days by the provincial authorities is the possible return of the Sharifs to the city and their reaction to it.

Though waiting for final instructions from the federal government, the authorities in Punjab are spending sleepless nights mulling over how to control the situation if Nawaz Sharif and his family return to Pakistan on September 10.

According to sources on Wednesday, the authorities were still hoping that Mr Sharif would not be returning to Pakistan, but still assessing how to treat him if he does come.

They said the arrangements for the `occasion’ were being considered with the resolve that no one would be allowed to create law and order situation.

The sources, however, did not confirm whether there was any plan up the Punjab government’s sleeve to arrest former prime minister and his brother Mr Shahbaz Sharif. But, they said the government would take all steps with regard to its responsibility to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, the IG met the home secretary in his office and sources said, besides other things, they also discussed how to maintain order on the Sharifs’ arrival.

“Nothing is clear so far but the government will have to avoid use of any traditional methods to stop the PML-N supporters from welcoming their leaders, particularly in view of the recent Supreme Court judgment that allowed their return to the country,” the sources claimed.
