TOKYO, March 14: President Gen Pervez Musharraf met Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko here on Thursday at the Imperial Palace.

In an unprecedented gesture, the Emperor and the Empress received the President and Begum Sehba Musharraf at the entrance of the Imperial Palace.

This was the first meeting of the President with the royal couple. The President and Begum Sehba Musharraf also attended a luncheon hosted by the Emperor and the Empress following the meeting.

HOUSE SPEAKER: Speaker of the House of Representatives Tamisuke Watanuki and President of the House of Councillors Dr Yudaka Inoue met President Pervez Musharraf at the Diet, the Japanese Parliament building.

They lauded Pakistan’s role in the fight against international terrorism.

The Japanese Parliament representatives particularly referred to the Jan 12 address to the nation by President Musharraf in which he took action against five extremist groups and made policy guidelines to eliminate extremism and intolerance from the society.

They said once the elections are held in October and parliament resumes proceedings, the Japanese elected members would re-start their parliamentary contacts.—APP
