Farhan upstages Aamir to clinch crown

LAHORE, Aug 31: Second seed Farhan Mehboob, upset top seed Aamir Atlas to win the All-Wapda inaugural Punjab Open squash championship final at the Punjab Squash Complex on Friday.

Farhan played like a true champion and salvaged the lead twice, before winning the fifth game to lift the trophy.

Farhan fought for 62 minutes to finally knock out a superior rival Aamir with the score of 11-7,6-11,11-9,8-11,11-9.

The winner started off with a cake-walk victory in the first game, which lasted merely 16 minutes dropping just seven points.

However, in the second game Aamir retaliated in the same way, winning in style, while conceding just six points. Aamir, was set to take lead as in the beginning of the third game, he had managed a 6-3 lead but Farhan, unwilling to accept anything but victory, bounced back to catch up with his rival at the same score (6-6).

Farhan remained in front to finally grab the game to again take a 2-1 lead. Aamir again drew level (2-2), winning the fourth game and the final was a treat to watch for the spectators.

The battle for supremacy continued till the final game where Farhan’s better stamina prevailed over his rival giving him victory.

In the women’s category, Muqaddas Ashraf (Wapda) emerged as the champion against Zoya Khalid (Army) after a 9-0,9-4,10-8 win.
