Police ‘beat’ Edhi driver

LAHORE, Aug 28: The Garden Town police in connivance with a traffic warden allegedly thrashed a driver of the Edhi Ambulance on Tuesday over suspicion of kidnapping a girl at Barkat Market traffic signal.

Edhi officials said their driver Shahid was directed to reach the city railway station to pick a shelterless girl, Aqsa, from the Railway Health Centre. They driver reached the place on an ambulance (EA-3397) and took the girl after getting signed an official document in order to drop her to the Township Edhi Homes.

As the vehicle reached the Barkat Market traffic signal, a warden approached him and asked him to park it along the roadside. The warden saw the girl resisting to the Edhi officials and thought they were trying to kidnap her.

Shahid showed him the official letter, but the warden radioed the information on Rescue 15 police emergency after which the Garden Town police officials reached the spot. They interrogated the driver and allegedly subjected him to torture.

Later, the officials took Shahid and the girl to the Garden Town police station where they produced them before their high-ups. They were released on the intervention of the Edhi officials.

The Garden Town police said they had received a call informing them about the kidnap of a girl by the Edhi officials. A police team reached the spot and arrested the driver.

According to police, their officials released him after taking necessary details about the girl and the Edhi driver. —Staff Reporter
