PESHAWAR, March 13: A delegation of elders comprising representatives of Aslahi Jirga, members of union council and social workers called on the NWFP Minister for Information and Education, Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani, at his office here on Wednesday.
The members of the delegation apprised the minister of the problems being faced by the people of their area regarding education and briefed him about the activities of their organization.
They informed the minister that Aslahi Jirga was trying to resolve the social and economic problems of the people. They also informed that an NGO - S&SW - was trying to resolve the problems in the field of education and environment.
The delegation members said that ten rooms of a college in their area had been constructed at a cost of Rs4 million on self-help basis, while an amount of one million rupees had been arranged for the construction of ten more rooms in the same college. They said that now the sanction of staff for the college is awaited. They also appreciated the establishment of a girls college in Karnal Sher Khan Kali (Swabi), saying that it was located at such a place that the people of a number of previously ignored villages would benefit from it.
The delegation also thanked the governor and education minister for taking personal interest in sanctioning of these two colleges. They also invited the education minister to a visit to the area.
The minister issued instructions to the concerned authorities for the resolution of problems apprised by the delegation. The minister directed that efforts should be made to open classes in the said college from the next academic year.
As for non-availability of furniture in the schools of the area, Mr Gilani said that Rs6 million had been given to the district government for supply of furniture to these schools and by the end of the financial year these problems would have been resolved. —PPI
