HYDERABAD, Aug 14: The 60th Independence Day commenced across the province on Tuesday with people offering special prayers in the mosques for the integrity of the country and district and town nazims hoisting national flag.

Many social and political organisations had also organised different programmes and rallies to mark the day in which the participants danced to folk and national songs on the roads.

In Hyderabad, District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil hoisted national flag at 9 am at his secretariat at the district government's main function attended by students and district officials. He distributed appreciation certificates, shields and cash prizes among students, who had topped the BISE examinations and also gave away certificates and cash awards among heirs of the policemen, who had died in line of duty.

All the government high schools and colleges and Hilal-i-Ahmer had organised functions. A pictorial exhibition on the independence was arranged by Mehran Arts Council Latifabad.

The University of Sindh celebrated the day at Allama I.I.Kazi Campus Jamshoro and Elsa Kazi Campus with Vice-Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui performing flag-hoisting ceremony.

The Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) celebrated the day with VC Prof. Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput performing flag-hoisting ceremony followed by passing out parade and national anthem.

VC of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Prof. Dr. Naushad A.Sheikh, hoisted flag in the campus, followed by national anthem.

Activists of People’s Party Parliamentarians staged a rally on Monday night at the conclusion of which the leaders cut a cake and distributed sweets among patients in government hospitals.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz cut a 60 pound cake and offered special prayers for the country's well-being. PML-F also held a function at taluka secretariat.

In Tando Allahyar, District Nazim Dr. Rahila Magsi performed flag-hoisting ceremony at 7.58 am at the district council. Jamshoro DCO Dr. Khawar Jamil performed flag-hoisting at taluka municipal office and distributed sweets among patients.

In Dadu, District Nazim hoisted flag at zila council lawn and distributed fruits and medicines among patients at the Civil Hospital and prisoners at the District Jail.

People in Mirpurkhas celebrated the Independence Day with great enthusiasm with the main official ceremony held at Gama Stadium where District Nazim Dr Sughra Junejo hoisted national flag and witnessed march-past.

School children demonstrated PT show, tableau and national songs while special children showed their skills in karate and gymnastics. Later, she inaugurated an educational caravan that would go to different areas of the district to create awareness among people about education.

The main function of the Independence Day in Mithi was held at the Government Boys High School playground where District Nazim Arbab Anwar hoisted national flag.

Hundreds of people from Karachi thronged the Keenjhar Lake in Thatta district to celebrate the Independence Day while several motorcyclists were injured when a youth slipped on the National Highway and collided with other motorcycles.

In Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Shikarpur and many other towns and union councils, nazims hoisted national flags and listened to national anthem as a show of patriotism.
