BANGKOK, Aug 11: China appear ready to dominate the World University Games like they hope to do when they host next year’s Beijing Olympics. Chinese shooters collected six golds and Fan Ye took the women’s all-round title in gymnastics as China won seven golds on Saturday to move into the second place on the medal table with nine, one behind leading Russia.

China could be well clear when the University Games end next Saturday.

On the National Stadium track, Britain’s Simeon Williamson won the men’s 100 metres in 10.28sec, .05 seconds ahead of China’s Zhang Peimeng. Johanna Manninen of Finland won the women’s 100 in 11.46.

Australian Sean Wroe and Olga Tereshkova of Kazakhstan won the 400-metre races, Wroe by more than a half-second over second-place finisher Piotr Klimczak of Poland. Italian swimmer Federica Pellegrini won the 400 freestyle on Saturday in a games-record time of 4:06.11.

Brian Jones picked up a gold for Canada in the men’s 200-metre individual medley, while Andrey Grechin of Russia won the men’s 100 freestyle.

The US won the women’s 800 freestyle relay, their fifth gold medal of the games – all in the pool.

Earlier on Saturday, Morocco and North Korea added their names to the gold medal list for the first time at the games as their athletes dominated the half-marathons.

Mohamed Fadil of Morocco won the men’s 21-kilometre race in 1:05.49, 25 seconds ahead of his countryman Najim El Gady. Japan’s Takahashi Toyoda took the bronze.

North Korean athletes filled three of the top four places in the women’s race, with Kim Kum-ok winning in 1:12.31 and Japan’s Kei Terada finishing second, six seconds behind. Jong Yong-ok took the bronze and compatriot Jo Pun-hui was fourth.

On the opening day of softball, South Korea edged the US 6-5, then the US and Australia had their game suspended due to darkness in the eighth inning of a scoreless game.

The game will resume on Monday in the top of the eighth inning with US runners on first and third with no outs.

The US led 5-3 in their opener but South Korea scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead, and then held the Americans scoreless in the top of the seventh.

Canada won both their games 9-0 over Thailand and Italy with the mercy rule in effect, ending the games after five innings.—AP
