Published March 10, 2002

DADU, March 9: The growers, and activists of political parties and NGOs staged a protest demonstration outside Johi Press Club against the construction of greater Thal canal.

They were carrying banners and placards and were chanting slogans against the canal project.

The demonstrators were led by the president of the Abadgar Association, Johi taluka, Ghulam Qadir Rind, and Chhinni UC Nazim, Ghulam Ali Shahani.

Speaking to the demonstrators, Mr Rind said that owing to the shortage of water, half of the province was already suffering under drought-like condition and the construction of Thal canal would further destroy the agrarian economy of Sindh.

Mr Shahani called upon political parties to unite on one platform to raise voice against the construction of greater Thal canal. Later, the protestors observed a token hunger strike outside the press club.
