Prof Chughtai laid to rest

LAHORE, July 23: Former Punjab University vice-chancellor and Pakistan Movement worker Prof Dr Muniruddin Chughtai, who died here on Sunday, was buried at the Cavalry Ground graveyard on Monday. He was 80.

He has left behind a widow and three daughters.

Prof Chughtai’s funeral prayers, held at Khalid Masjid in Cavalry Ground, were attended by a large number of PU faculty members, employees, students and people from all walks of life including former PU vice-chancellors Prof Dr Rafique Ahmad, Prof Dr Khalid Hameed Sheikh, acting vice-chancellor Prof Dr Arif Butt, PU registrar Prof Dr Naeem Khan, former foreign minister Sartaj Aziz, S M Zafar, Justice Aftab Farrukh (retired), Saeed Kirmani and others.

Prof Chughtai had joined the university as a political science lecturer in 1961 and retired as professor after serving the university for 26 years on Nov 30 1987. He, however, was re-employed as professor for two years and given the charge of pro-vice-chancellor as well.

Later on, he was appointed as vice-chancellor of the Punjab University on April 22, 1987, for a four-year term.

During his 26-year stint at the PU, Prof Chughtai also served as head of the political science department and director of the Institute of Education and Research. He had supervised 26 PhDs and had a number of books to his credit. Prof Chughtai’s colleagues say that he was a very humble person.

Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has expressed deep sense of sorrow over the sad demise of former PU vice-chancellor.

In a condolence message, the chief minister paid rich tributes to the late Prof Chughtai for his services in the field of education and research as well as creating awareness among youth regarding the Pakistan Movement. He prayed that Allah Almighty may rest his soul in eternal peace.
