MIRPURKHAS, July 15: A weary old man axed his four-year-old granddaughter to death in a fit of rage in Phuladiyoon town on Saturday and then attempted to commit suicide by drinking liquid pesticide.

Reports said that 50-year-old Moolchand killed his granddaughter, Hasina, because she had been crying for hours. He then tried to kill himself after the gravity of his action sank in.

Neighbours moved the old man to Rural Health Centre where police took him into custody after filing a case against him.

SUICIDE: One Ashraf Khatoon, 30, wife of Aachar Khaskheli, committed suicide by taking pesticide in Zahidabad village of Hussain Bux Mari taluka late on Saturday night.

The cause of the suicide was said to be some domestic problems.

PROTEST: A 15-mmeber hari family, including women and children, staged a demonstration outside the press club on Sunday in protest against alleged atrocities of landlords.

The family members Marwan wife of Eidal, Wasayo, Dano, Photo and their children demanded protection against the landlords and said that Arbab Noor Mohammad and Arbab Moto whose land they were tilling had kept them in illegal confinement under the watch of gunmen near Chhore in Umerkot district for two years.

They said that one day they found an opportunity and escaped to a hari camp in Mirpurkhas.

The landlords never settled their accounts, they said and demanded that the government should help them get back their share in the crops and provide them protection.
