Prisoners face inconvenience

Published July 14, 2007

GUJAR KHAN, July 13: The under-trial prisoners are facing hardships after converting the local judicial lock-up into a ‘bakhshi khana’ and shifting them to Adiala Central Jail Rawalpindi.

The judicial lock-up in Gujar Khan has capacity to keep some 100 under-trial prisoners. Recently the tehsil administration converted it into a bakhshi khana for the prisoners brought from Adiala Jail to appear in local courts.

Consequently, the under-trial prisoners, facing criminal charges in the local courts, have been shifted to Adiala Jail.

This has created inconveniences for the prisoners and their heirs.

They urged upon the home-secretary Punjab and inspector- general Punjab prisons to establish separate bakhshi khana in Gujar Khan and restore the judicial lock-up.
