PESHAWAR, July 9: A clerk of the General Post Office, charged with misappropriation of millions of rupees in the pension section, was remanded in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau for 15 days by a court here on Monday.

Accused Asmatullah Khan, an absconder for more than a year, was arrested by NAB on Sunday.

He was produced before the accountability court headed by Irshad Qaiser and NAB officials told the court that two references had been filed against him in absentia.

The court remanded the accused into the custody of NAB and directed the bureau to produce him again on July 23.

The bureau had earlier arrested a female clerk of GPO, Nuzhat Begum, and four other officials for misappropriation of pensions funds. Asmatullah was also charged with them in the case.

NAB officials said that in one reference Asmatullah and other accused were charged with embezzling Rs49.05 million and in the other with Rs12.1 million.
