QUBO SAEED KHAN, July 7: President General Pervez Musharraf has said that a long-term strategy will be devised for prevention of flash floods in future. He was addressing the people hit by floods and rains in the Qubo Saeed Khan taluka of the Qambar-Shahdadkot district on Saturday.

He said the strategy would be devised by the federal government in consultation with the Sindh government after undertaking necessary study.

The president distributed Rs2,000 each among the victims during a visit to the flood-hit areas. He announced that that Rs15,000 would also be provided immediately to every affected household.

He said that the flood protection bund would be strengthened to prevent rainwater coming from the mountains in the area. This tragedy, he added, would be converted into an opportunity by improving the lot of people. He promised that the victims would get more than what they have lost.

Gen Musharraf said there was no dearth of resources and it would be ensured that the money was utilised in a judicious manner and that the aid reached the right persons.

He paid tributes to the armed forces and the civil administration for carrying out relief work.

Gen Musharraf said that the armed forces were for the service of the entire nation. He said there were some 70,000 people from Sindh in the army.

He said the money would be made available for construction of better houses after an assessment of the destruction.—APP
