RAWALPINDI, July 4: Male students out of the 1,200 students who surrendered to the security forces in Islamabad have been shifted to Adiala Jail while the girls to Haji Camp near Chur, official sources said.

The students had been told to give themselves up after the government set a deadline for them to surrender on Wednesday and offered Rs5,000 in cash and a safe passage.

A security source said some other jails in Punjab had also been put on alert and the jail authorities directed to make arrangements to house the Lal Masjid students.

Shahid Saleem Baig, the superintendent of Adiala jail, told Dawn that around 402 male students had so far arrived there.

The superintendent said a 16-member team of doctors and paramedics had been called to provide medical aid to the students. Two of the students, Mohammad Bilal and Mohammad Ashraf, who had suffered bullet injuries, were shifted to the DHQ hospital.

“All students brought to the jail would be examined by the doctors’ team,” Mr Baig said.

Nearly 800 girl students have been shifted to Haji Camp, Rawalpindi.

DCO Rawalpindi Irfan Elahi told Dawn that 20 passenger buses were sent to Islamabad to bring the girl students. However, he gave no exact number of girl students, but said: “It could be more than 500 as some of the students were handed over to their parents.”

At around 2am, an indefinite shoot-to-kill curfew was imposed in the entire sector where Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa are located. Soldiers in armoured vehicles encircled the Lal Masjid and set up ‘walk through’ gates as students from inside the complex started surrendering. Electricity supply to the mosque and Jamia Hafsa had already been cut off.

Meanwhile, around 300 parents who wanted to enter Islamabad staged a demonstration and blocked the road at Pirwadhai Mor when they were stopped by the police from heading towards Lal Masjid.

SSP Operations Yasin Farooq said Rawalpindi had virtually been sealed as police pickets had been set up at all the entry points.
