ISLAMABAD, July 3: Pakistan Auditor General Younas Khan has informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that a former head of the Pakistan Post, a retired brigadier, had declared that the postal department was an independent body and refused to abide by rules.

In a meeting on Tuesday, Mr Khan alleged that Brig Agha Masudul Hassan misused millions of rupees with impunity. He said that when the audit department officers approached Mr Hassan for the auditing of accounts, he refused to allow the officers to enter the post offices.

The auditor general said that Mr Hassan told the officers that the Pakistan Post was an independent body with its own laws and the government rules did not apply on the department.

Criticising army officers, a participant of the meeting said our military men considered themselves above the law and violated rules and regulations with impunity. They claimed to be a disciplined force but, in fact, they were the most undisciplined people because they always refused to obey government laws, he added.
