THATTA, July 2: Army and Rangers have been called out in Thatta district to cop with any emergency as the district was hit by heavy rain coupled with strong winds on Monday. Other parts of Sindh, from the southern district of Badin to northern area of Jacobabad, also received moderate to heavy rain.
In Thatta district, rainwater flowing from mountains inundated a grid station near Jherruk as a result of which 50 villages were plunged into darkness. Water also submerged some parts of the national highway near village Haji Shaiakhani.
Reports reaching here said that the coastal areas of Chuhar Jamali, Shah Bunder, Ladhiyoon, Kharochhan and Keti Bunder also received rains with strong winds.
Badin district was hit by moderate to heavy rain. Showers began at 5pm in the city and continued for over two hours. Heavy downpour was reported in other towns of the district and coastal villages.
The district administration arranged boats, vehicles and reopened 11 relief camps. The DCO Badin, Safdar Ali Agha told Dawn that a sum of Rs2 million has been set aside, out of which Rs500,000 had been put at the disposal of district government. The wing commander Rangers Badin also established eight relief camps.
Meanwhile, religious people started reciting “Salats”.
Heavy rainfall hit Jacobabad district, submerged roads as the drainage system collapsed.
Thatta district officer revenue Hadi Bux Kalhoro told reporters on Monday that Army and Rangers had been called to meet any eventuality. He said about 100 army personnel had been deputed at Sujawal.
About 300 Rangers personnel have set up a rescue centre at the Makli Cricket Ground with the arrangement of motorboats.
He said that about 30 camps had been set up and schools vacated for makeshift arrangements. The district officer revenue claimed that people of coastal areas had been informed of the forecast.
Meanwhile, Sindh received heavy to moderate rain on Monday after a day’s gap.
