LONDON: Police were on high alert on Sunday as a huge concert in memory of Princess Diana got under way at London's Wembley stadium, a day after Britain raised its security threat level to maximum.
More than 60,000 revellers joined Princes William and Harry for the six-hour long extravaganza in memory of their late mother, who would have turned 46 years old this weekend.
Performers scheduled to take the stage include Diana's favourites like Duran Duran and Supertramp as well as Sir Elton John, whom the brothers hope will sing the version of “Candle in the Wind” that he performed at Diana's funeral in 1997.
Despite the safety fears, fans and stars alike were determined to celebrate Diana's life as they arrived for the concert, due to end at 10 pm (2100 GMT).
“I think it's a really good tribute to her,” said Sam Mitchell, 32, who travelled from Suffolk, northeast of London. “I think she would love it. There are a lot of bands that she liked.” Duran Duran band member John Taylor paid tribute to Diana's sons for coming up with the idea for the concert.—AFP
