KARACHI, June 30: National Disaster Management Authority chief Lt-Gen (retd) Muhammad Farooq Khan has said storms and rains had claimed 99 lives in Sindh and 50 in Balochistan.

Farooq Khan was briefing journalists on the post-disaster situation in the two provinces at the Governor’s House here on Saturday.

He said another monsoon depression could cause widespread torrential rains within 72 hours. This warning was given by him quoting the Met office forecast.

Referring to the situation in Balochistan, he said the rains had brought misery to 1.1 million people, 250,000 of them homeless.

He said, according to official figures, Sindh topped the toll of human life – with 99 deaths, by official count. The unofficial count was 250.

For Balochistan, the corresponding figures were 50 and 100, the NDMA chief said.
