KARACHI, June 26: In view of the inclement weather, hundreds of people have been evacuated from various coastal areas of the city including Keamari, Mubarak Village, Landhi and Bin Qasim and moved to temporary shelters set up by the city government.
This was stated by the city nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, during his visit to various rain-affected areas of the city and the relief camps late Monday night. He said that all arrangements had been made in the relief camps to provide food and other facilities to the rain victims until the weather turned normal.
Mr Kamal said that the city government’s relevant staff had been deployed along the banks of Malir and Lyari rivers and would remain on duty round-the-clock to monitor the evacuation process in those areas.
The nazim also visited M.A. Jinnah Road, Hasan Square, North Nazimabad, Sabzi Mandi, Shah Faisal Colony, Liaquatabad, Sharea Faisal and other areas. He directed the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) officials to restore power supply to the affected areas. The nazim ordered the city government officials and relevant staff to drain out rainwater from the roads. Mr Kamal claimed that no major complaint was received by the city government regarding accumulation of rainwater across the city as the city government and town administrations had taken timely steps for pumping out rainwater.
He said the availability of proper sewerage systems in the newly constructed projects had also helped avert such incidents.
The nazim also ordered establishment of rain emergency centers in all towns of the city to ensure immediate relief to the citizens.
The main rain emergency center has been set up at the City Nazim Secretariat and can be reached through 0800-12012, 9232434 and 9230454.

RELIEF FUND: Sindh Chief Secretary Shakil Durrani has warned against any negligence in the relief activities as the government had already released the necessary funds in this regard.
Mr Durrani visited various rain-hit areas of the city on Tuesday and asked the Sindh Relief Commissioner and other relevant departments to expedite relief activities.
He stressed that affected persons should be moved from the coastal and low-lying areas to safety and all steps should be taken to provide them with food, medicine and other items.
The chief secretary also reviewed the performance of the rain monitoring and control room set up in his office. He directed t he health department to provide all-out medical assistance to the masses and to ensure availability of anti-snake bite vaccines at the government hospitals.
Mr Durrani also directed the officials concerned to seek the services of army and Rangers through the home department, if required.
He ordered that the 15 control rooms established in the province should be kept functional round-the-clock.
