SWABI, March 5: The National Database and Registration Authority has stopped issuing computerized national identity cards through its 25 designated representatives in the district and now the people would get their identity cards through the post office, Nadra officials informed Dawn on Tuesday.

In this connection, a meeting of the Nadra officials and representatives was held on Monday, in which the latter were informed about the government decision.

However, the representatives were asked to continue work in their respective areas and give the receipt to the individuals who would get their identity cards from the post office.

Some representatives apprehended that the Afghan displaced people in the district might try to get identity cards by dodging the post office staff. They said that some Afghan DPs had already managed to submit the application forms to get computerized identity cards.

“Three such cases have already been reported to the Nadra officials, but they failed to take a timely action,” said a Nadra representative, adding that a number of Afghan DPs had already succeeded to get Pakistan’s national identity cards and now they were trying to get the computerized cards.

The representatives demanded that Nadra should make payment to them for the previous work, whereas the Nadra officials said that they would take up the issue with the high-ranking officials and that the payment would be made to the representatives if they gave the approval.

An official said that so far 105,000 computerized identity cards had been issued in the district, adding that a strategy has been chalked out for removing errors in the cards.

Meanwhile, union council Nazimeen and members have demanded that the old method of issuing identity cards should be restored.
