MULTAN, June 22: Several retired army men will present a guard of honour to Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on his arrival here at Kutchery Chowk today (Saturday).

According to a code of conduct agreed upon by lawyers and the district administration, lawyers will not raise slogans against the army during the chief justice’s visit to Multan, sources told Dawn.

But High Court Bar Association President Habibullah Shakir said lawyers had not assured the district administration that they would not raise slogans against the army.

Chamber of Small Traders, Multan, President Muhammad Khalid Qureshi alleged that the administration had removed welcome banners from various roads of the city.

Shakir said he was unaware of any such action.

Multan District Bar Association President Muhammad Akram Bhatti said that people wearing Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi, Pakhtoon and Kashmiri dresses would be released from a make-believe detention centre on the arrival of the chief justice and added that a puppet show, horse dance, fireworks and ‘dhool taap’ would also be part of the reception.

Regional Police Officer Mirza Muhammad Ali said that police had finalised arrangements for the chief justice’s visit and added that police contingents from other cities had also been called in to maintain order in the city today.
